“I not only use all the brains I have, but all the brains I can borrow.”
Woodrow Wilson
It sucks that training budgets across North America have been slashed. If there is money money in the budget for training you, the trainer, it is spent to send you to mandatory instructor recertification courses. As a result there is little money left for professional development training for you and your fellow trainers.
It sucks that this is compounded by severe restrictions on out of state / out of province travel keeping you from attending great professional development training, if you can find it.
Add on the issue of personnel shortages that make it difficult, if not impossible, to attend training that wil help you on your journey to be a great trainer and deliver awesome training to your officers.
Unfortunately, these challenges are not new and are not restricted to specific agencies or regions. I experienced many of these frustrations during the last part of my career with the Calgary Police when I was assigned to a full time training unit. Over the last decade I have talked to law enforcement trainers from across Noth America, and around the world who have expressed, and continue to express these frustrations.
In my courses and seminars I issue the challenge to “Embrace the Suck”. If I am going to preach this message to trainers, I need to find a way to help you do just that. It is for this very reason that I started writing the Excellence in Training blog over 6 1/2 years ago and why in August of this year I launched the Excellence in Training Academy, a membership site for law enforcement trainers. My thought was that if you cannot get to the training, I need to find a way to bring the training to you.
I didn’t want this to just be about the world of training according to Brian. I wanted to follow Woodrow Wilson’s advice and borrow as many brains as possible. That is why I am reaching out to trainers across North America, and across the globe, and interviewing them about a wide variety of aspects related to the law enforcement profession and law enforcement training. I will be sharing these interviews along with webinars, book reviews, answers to your most pressing training questions and other relevent training every week with the Excellence in Training Academy Community.
For an investment of less that a dollar a day you can become part of the Excellence in Training Academy Community and have access to 30 to 60 minutes of professional development training every week. The training is designed to help you become a great trainer and deliver awesome training and it can be accessed from your home or work computer, your tablet or your smart phone.
