As a trainer it is critical that you help officers understand who and what they represent. When they put on the uniform or clip on the badge they represent themselves, their team/squad/unit, their agency, their community and the profession as a whole. They represent everyone who is currently serving in their agency, all those who have gone before them and all those who will come after them. Their decisions and actions will reflect on more than just themselves.
Look no further than the incident on April 10, 2017 when David Dao was removed from United Airlines Flight 3411 in Chicago. United Airlines is a company with 86,000 employees with a fleet of 738 planes flying to 342 destinations world wide. There was a small number of United Airlines employees involved in the decision making related to that incident and a small number of law enforcement officers present and directly involved. The discussions about corporate culture, rights, leadership and decision making will go on for some time. That is not the point of this post.
Listen the talk on all the media and social media channels. Look at the protests. They are not talking about the small number of people actually involved. They are talking about United Airlines. They are talking about the aviation industry. They are talking about the law enforcement profession. They are protesting against United Airline and “police brutality”.
You need to provide your people with tools to help them make good decisions. You need to teach them what the law allows them to do, what policy allows them to do and give them the competence and confidence to do their job, and do it well.
Remind the men and women who have chose to honourably serve their communities as law enforcement professionals who and what they represent and always remember as a trainer who and what you represent.
Take care.
