When you are student in someone else’s class how are you being? Are you being an active and open learner, or a closed and passive knower?
Do you show up with an open mind and a willingness to learn? Or, do you show up doubting there is anything you can learn from this class or this instructor?
Do you sit near the front of the class and participate (participate, not dominate) in discussions? Or, do you sit at the back of the room with your arms crossed and a “I dare you to teach me something” look on your face?
Are you looking and listening for new ways to connect the dots, communicate ideas, and engage class participants? Or, is your mind closed to what you might be able to learn?
Are you thinking:
- That’s a new way of thinking about that issue. I never thought of it that way.
- That was a great question to the class.
- That was a great way to answer that question from the class.
- I like that quote.
- I like the way he or she explained this concept.
- I like the way they use PowerPoint as an aide and not a teleprompter.
- I like the way they used that video to make the point.
Or, Do you sit there thinking:
- I know that.
- I knew that already.
- I know that.
- What time is lunch?
- I know that.
- I knew that already.
- I wonder what time we are done today?
- I know that.
- I know that.
- I knew that already.
Being an open and active learner will make you a better instructor.
Being a closer and passive learner will allow you to continue to embrace mediocrity.
Which are you being?
Take care.
