Recently I have been working through a series of training videos and audio recordings by author and leadership expert Robin Sharma. One of his messages regarding leadership was this:
Leadership is about three things:
- Inspiration
- Influence
- Impact
As a trainer, you are a leader. Therefore, being a trainer is about:
- Inspiration
- Influence
- Impact
You can inspire the people you train to embrace excellence and seek to improve in little ways every day so they are always better tomorrow than they are today. Inspire them to make every day a training day. Inspire them to read, learn and grow. Inspire them to push themselves a little harder in their workouts. Inspire them to seek mastery in their physical skills. Inspire them to train with imagination and emotion.
As a trainer you have tremendous influence with the people you train. You influence them through your words, your actions, your appearance and the way you deliver training. You influence what they believe about themselves. You influence how they think. You influence they way they respond to failure. As a trainer you are an influence professional.
You impact the lives of your officers and their families. You will never know how many lives you save. You will never know how many times officers get to go home safely to their families because of the training you do. You will never know how many people become trainers because of the impact you had on them. You impact they way they do the job. You impact they way they treat people. You impact their careers.
What you do as a trainer is important. What you do as a trainer make a difference. As a trainer you are a leader. Take that responsibility seriously.
