One of the three e-books I am reading right now is Seth Godin’s manifesto Stop Stealing Dreams (what is school for?). In the first part of the book he makes a statement that relates not only to our school systems, but to law enforcement training.
“We invest thousands of hours exposing millions of students to fiction and literature, but end up training most of them to never again read for fun (one study found that 58 percent of all Americans never read for pleasure after they graduate from school). As soon as we associate reading a book with taking a test, we’ve missed the point.”
Have we done the same thing with training? How many of you can remember being turned off from training because of the way you were treated in a training session or because of the poor manner in which the training was delivered?
The challenge for all of us as trainers is to deliver training in such a way that people are excited to come back to training and actually want more training. You want to get them so excited about the ideas and concepts you are teaching that they are ordering the books you talk about (I hope you talk about a lot of books in your training) right after class. In fact, in todays world of technology if you get them excited enough they will go online immediately on their smart phone or tablet and order the book while you are teaching.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make training challenging, engaging, and fun and leave your participants wanting more. If you choose not to accept this mission, please get out of training.
I would encourage you to go to www.stopstealingdreams.com and watch a TEDx talk where Seth talks about this concept then download the manifesto in one of the many available formats.
Take care.
