A recent post on Hugh MacLeod’s GapingVoid Cartoons blog really struck a cord with me. His cartoon and message were about the Love – Hate relationship:
Entrepreneurs feel this way about their businesses, artists feel this way about their art.
Some days it’s impossible. Some days you want to give up and go home.
Some days it’s everything. Some days you can’t tear yourself away.
Some days this is all on the same day.
It’s exhausting, it’s overwhelming… and it’s beautiful.
Because you don’t hate – or love – things you don’t care about. It’s only the truly important stuff that moves us to the crazy depths and heights of emotion.
The curious dichotomy of the human heart…
What struck me is how much this applies to the world of training. Some days you love the challenge of creatively managing budget cuts, the long hours, the skeptics and syncs in the class, and the challenge of keeping mandated training fun, fresh and challenging. On those days you cannot pull yourself away as you embrace the suck, find the good in the challenge and the students and kick your creative juices into high gear. Other days you just want to quit and walk away. Hugh drove it all home when he wrote, “you don’t hate – or love – things you don’t care about…..” It is because you care, because you are passionate about training and the opportunity to make a difference in officers’ lives that you do what you do and that you experience the love – hate relationship. Embrace that relationship, it means you still care.
Take care.
