I very often get asked the question, “What do you believe is the most important quality to be a great trainer?” This is always a challenging question and one to which I have changed my answer over the years. The qualities that often come to mind immediately are:
- Passion
- Knowledge
- Commitment
- Credibility
- Stage presence
- Energy
Over time however I have come to believe the most important quality is Clarity. Clarity? Yes, clarity.
Clarity regarding why you are a trainer. Are you a trainer because you want to make a difference in the lives of the people you have the honour and privilege to train? Or, did you become a trainer for some self serving reason?
Clarity in your mission, which is to provide the best learning experience possible for your officers.
Clarity about what you need to do to continually improve the quality of your training so you can improve the competence and confidence of your officers.
Clarity in the fact the people attending your training are the heroes of the training session, not you.
Clarity about the reality that becoming a great trainer takes work and is a never ending journey.
Clarity that every officer deserves to experience awesome training.
Without Clarity all those other qualities on the list will not result in you becoming a great trainer who provides an awesome training experience for your personnel.
What about you? What would you say is the most important quality to become a great trainer?
Take care.
