Excellence in Training: The 3 C’s

As the Deputy Executive Director of ILEETA I had the privilege os speaking to our members at both the opening and closing of our annual conference last week. At the opening ceremonies I encouraged them to consider three words during their week of inspired learning. Those three words were: Connection, Commitment, Contribution.

I believe these three words are like the W.I.N. philosophy in that they can be applied in a variety of settings and formats. Therefore, I am going to challenge you to consider those three words in your role as a trainer.

Connection: Being a great trainer is about making a connection with your audience. You make that connection by being authentic, displaying humility, being prepared and making it clear through your words, actions and content that the audience is the hero of the presentation and you are there for them.

Commitment: In addition to making a commitment to your learners (your officers) you must make a commitment to continually grow and develop as a trainer. Debrief yourself after each session so you can learn from every training session. Learn from the participants in your training. Seek out information through books, blogs and training sessions that will help you create a more engaging learning experience for your officers. Be committed to bringing your officers the most relevant information and to presenting it in an engaging manner.

Contribution: Make a contribution beyond just standing in the front of the room and teaching material from a lesson plan. Make a contribution to the profession by sharing your successes and failures with fellow trainers. Make a contribution to the profession by writing articles or getting involved in an organization like ILEETA. Get involved in your State / Province / Regional Trainers Association if one exists. Mentor a new trainer, or someone who aspires to one day be a trainer. Make a contribution to something bigger than yourself.

Let W.I.N. and the 3 C’s help guide you to Excellence in Training.

Take care.
