Excellence in Training: Trust me. It’s broken.

If you have been reading my Excellence in Training, W.I.N. or am I that man? blogs for any time you know I am a big fan of Seth Godin. This recent post from Godin struck me as a challenge to all trainers:

Different kinds of broken systems

From healthy to toast…

Something is broken, we know it’s broken, we can fix it right away and we’ll learn from it.

It’s broken, we know it’s broken, we fixed it, don’t worry, but we learned nothing, it will break again, I’m just doing my job.

It’s broken, we know it’s broken, but we don’t think we can afford to fix it.

It’s broken, but we don’t know it’s broken.

It’s not broken (it is, but we’re not willing to admit it).

It’s broken, we may or may not know it’s broken, but mostly, we don’t care enough to try to fix it, to learn how we could fix it better or even to accept help from people who care.

The Challenge – Step back and ask yourself these question:

  • What is broken in my training, what stage of broken is it at and what do I need to do now to fix it?
  • What is broken in my agency, what stage of broken is it at and what do I need to do now to begin to fix it?
  • What is broken in the law enforcement culture, what stage of broken is it at and what do I need to do now to fix it?
If your initial response is that nothing is broken then step out of the land of denial and look again. While we are making progress there are still a lot of broken aspects of law enforcement training across North America. Trainers are still picking on and embarrassing officers during training. There is still a lot of crappy Powerpoint being used in law enforcement training. There are still trainers starting off training sessions with statements like, “This is a bunch of crap, but I have to teach it anyways”, “this is dry material so we are going to blast through it.” and “You are probably never going to use this but, it is mandatory training.”  There are still training programs that believe that stress is the key to effective training. There are still firearms training programs focused on teaching people to qualify and not to win gunfights.
There are training related elements in our agencies and our culture that are broken. Too many agencies still see training as an expense instead of an investment. We have a leadership void in the profession. Too many agencies fail to provide leadership training at all levels of the organization starting with patrol officers. In most agencies leadership is a course, and not a culture. Law enforcement is still a culture where we drive too fast, don’t wear our seat belts and some still do not wear body armour and it is costing lives.
Start making a list of what’s broken in your training, your agency and the professionand beside every item on your list identify at least one action step that you commit to take today to start repairing it.

Take care.
