“Action is the foundational key to all success.”
Pablo Picasso
How often have you walked away from a seminar, an ILEETA conference or an instructor course with a list of great ideas on things you could do differently in your classes?
How often have you finished listening to an interview or watching a webinar from The Excellence in Training Academy inspired to make some changes to your content, your curriculum or your delivery?
It is easy to get fired up in the moment and come up with great ideas on what you can do to make your training better. But, then you get back to the academy or back to the department and get overwhelmed with the training you have to deliver, the projects the boss left on your desk while you were gone or other work or family commitments. The great ideas too often get set off to the side and never get implemented.
Great ideas are a start, but they are not enough. You have to take action. Before you leave the conference or the seminar you need to develop a concrete plan on what action steps you will commit to take to implement the new idea. The plans starts with “Why”. Why is this important? How is this going to improve your training? Why should you take action to implement it? How will it improve the competence, confidence, skills, professionalism and lives of the officers you train? Once you are clear on the why (make sure you write it down) then the how and the what become easier.
You may find it helpful to share your action plan with someone, or a group of people, who will serve as accountability partners for you. This can be fellow trainers or friends who will be there to support you, prod you and serve as a sounding board for you when you find yourself frustrated and ready to give up. Support and accountability will always help drive action.
“Deciding is not doing, and wanting is not choosing. Transformation will take place not because of what you decide you want, but because of what you choose to do”
Eric Greitens
Pick one idea from the last seminar, conference or webinar that you planned to implement, but never did. Now create your action plan, starting with WHY, and then forward it to an accountability partner, or partners. Then get to work.
Next week we will talk about some of the roadblocks and barriers you may encounter on your journey.
Take care.
