If you don’t read non-fiction books regularly – Start. And read more than law enforcement books. Read about leadership, psychology, and how we learn.
“The only thing worse than not reading a book in the last ninety days is not reading a book in the last ninety days and thinking that it doesn’t matter”
Jim Rohn
If you are going to borrow or “steal” ideas, concepts, or philosophies from other trainers – Give credit to whomever you got the material from. Better yet, take the philosophies and ideas, build on them and develop your own material. Give credit for the original idea, but do the work to build your own content.
If you think you can just wing it and don’t need to plan and prepare – Think again. It does not matter how long you have been in the business, you owe it to the participants in your class to prepare.
If you are tempted to use another speaker or trainer’s signature story – Don’t. Create your own.
If you are about to belittle, embarrass or demean a participant in your class – Don’t do it. It is the kill switch to participation and learning.
If you think stress is the key to effective training – Think again. Context is king. Without context stress is just hazing.

“No matter how much you have achieved, you will always be merely good relative to what you can become. Greatness is an inherently dynamic process, not an end point. The moment you think of yourself as great, your slide toward mediocrity will have already begun.”
Jim Collins, Good to Great and The Social Sectors
