Last week I talked about the Power of 10 Minutes in relation to training and reading. This week’s post will build on that.
The research says that the ‘average’ person in North America spends an hour a day in their vehicle, or some form of public transportation, commuting to and from work. The question is, “How do you use that hour every day?”
Do you spend it listening to talk radio, country music, or screaming at the other drivers on the road?
Or, do you invest that hour in your personal and professional growth and development by turning your vehicle into a Learning Lab on Wheels by listening to audio books, podcasts or other educational material?
If you work 4 days a week and invest your 4 hour commute time every week, 48 weeks of the year into learning and growing time that works out to 192 hours of learning (the equivalent of 4.8 – 40 hour weeks of learning) every year. Over a 25 year career that is 4800 hours of learning.
If you work 5 days a week and invested 5 hours a week, 48 weeks of the year into your learning that works out to 240 hours of learning (the equivalent of 6 – 40 hour weeks of learning) every year. Over a 25 year career that is 6000 hours of learning.
If you averaged an hour a day every day of the year you would get 365 hours of learning every year. That is the equivalent of 9 – 40 hour weeks of learning every year. Over a 25 year career that is 9125 hours of learning.
Add that 4800 to 6000 hours to the 800 to 1000 hours of training from training 10 minutes a day and the 1520 hours of reading from reading 10 minutes a day and imagine how skilled, knowledgeable and valuable you will become over your career. Imagine how marketable you will be when you retire and move on to the next phase of your life and possibly a second career after you retire from law enforcement. If you have children imagine what they are learning from watching and listening to you on your journey of growth. Imagine if they make those same commitments and investments starting at an early age in their life. Just imagine…….
It is the small incremental improvements and the compound interest on the investment you make in your growth and develop that over time pays huge dividends.
Take care.
