In last week’s post An Apology From a Warrior Trainer I mentioned that while I do still talk about the Warrior Spirit in my seminars more of my focus is on talking about heroes.
Christopher Reeves said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure inspire of overwhelming obstacles.”
The ancient Greeks believed that every person has it within them to be a hero. They defined a hero as a protector; someone who has the ability to not only look after himself or herself, but also to look after someone else. They have the physical abilities, the knowledge, and the desire to serve. The core strengths of the hero are compassion, love and a commitment to something bigger than themselves. The hero is not necessarily the biggest, the fastest or the strongest; they are the most capable.
Law enforcement is a profession of heroes, protectors who have the desire to serve and to protect others and who often have to find the strength to persevere in spite of overwhelming obstacles.
Your role as a trainer is critical to the men and women who have chosen to serve and to be the protectors. Your role is to ensure they have the physical abilities, the knowledge and the skills. Your role is to ensure they are the most capable they can be so they can most effectively fill the role of protector. They must be able to protect themselves so they can protect their brother and sister officers and the citizens they have sworn to serve and protect.
These heroes rely on you.
Your communities depend on you.
Take your role seriously. Commit to the pursuit of excellence. Ensure you are the most capable of serving them. This means you must read, study, train, practice, get feedback, read, study, practice and get more feedback.
You must step back after every class and every presentation and ask yourself, “How can I make this better the next time I teach it.”
You must develop both the horizontal and the vertical strokes of the ‘T’ I wrote about in the post titled, Are You an I or a T.
Take care.
