Motivational and inspirational posters on the walls of your academies and training section are nice but, if they are just eye candy and do not reflect the reality of your culture then you need to either change your culture or be honest and take them all down.
If you claim you are committed to excellence in your training programs, but do nothing to continually review and enhance your programs as well as continually develop your current trainers to be better teachers, coaches, mentors and trainers and are not identifying, coaching, mentoring and developing the future trainers then excellence is a buzz word, not a commitment or a core value.
If you justify running a high stress or boot camp style academy to instil discipline but, your trainers show up late, have side conversations, are on their phones checking e-mail and Facebook when they are students in someone else’s training class, then “instilling discipline” simply means you get to scream and yell at recruits and punish them for mistakes and indiscrecions and discipline is not a core value.
If accountability is a core value of your agency but when you lose 30 to 40 % of the recruits in an academy class and your training staff do not have a hard look in the mirror and some honest discussions about what piece of that attrition they own and some hard conversations regarding their level of accountability, then accountability is not a true core value.
Walk around your academy and your training section and look at the posters on the wall. Review the core values for your agency (How many of your trainers know what the core values are?). Ask yourself, “Are we living these every day though the way we teach, train, mentor, and communicate?” If not, why not? If not, what can you do to change that? If the answer is yes, thank you. Now, what can you do to raise the bar even higher for yourself and your fellow trainers.
