A recent blog post by Seth Godin started with these three simple lines:
After you raise your hand…
Show up.
Show up and keep showing up.
Show up and keep showing up is key for all trainers, teachers and coaches. Show up to that class you have taught 20, 50, or 100 times before with a smile on your face. Show up the 100th time with the same passion, energy and enthusiasm you had the first 5 times you taught it. On the 100th time in addition to that energy and passion, bring the wisdom, knowledge, learning and insights you gained over the first 99 sessions.
You made a lot of mistakes during the first 99 sessions. Hopefully you learned from every one of those mistakes and use those insights to make every session just a little bit better than the previous one.
Hopefully you learned how to tell the stories in a more engaging way and you have altered the sequencing and look of the material to make it stickier for the participants. Ideally you have read a number of books, attended some conference and training classes along the way and pick up some insights on how to enhance the learning environment and better engage the participants.
If the 100th time you deliver that session it is the same as the first time, then you are long overdue to move on to something else and stop being a trainer, teacher or coach. If you are not growing and improving how can you expect the participants in your training sessions to improve?
What’s Important Now? Show and keep showing up a little better every time.
Take care.
