There is no ‘I’ in Team

We have all heard the expression “There is no ‘I’ in Team.” The purpose of this saying is to focus people on the importance of teamwork and working together to accomplish a goal. It is meant to reenforce the concept that more can be accomplished working as a group than as a number of individuals. At this point you might be thinking that this blog is about teamwork. In fact, it is not. A future blog post will be, but not today’s.

This blog is about you. It is about me. It is about our roles and responsibilities as individuals.

While there is no ‘I’ in ‘Team’ there certainly is in the following words:
  • Responsibility
  • Commitment
  • Accountability
  • W.I.N.
  • Warrior
  • Spirit
  • Leadership
  • Learning
  • Active
  • Motivation
  • Training
  • Achievement
  • Pursuit

We could go on at length with this list but I am sure you are starting to get the point. As students, trainers, learners, teachers, leaders, coaches and the many other roles we play in our life there is a powerful aspect of personal accountability and responsibility that is often over looked.

As trainers we too often have a tendency to blame the participants if they are not learning. We also blame budgets, management and other logistical issues for shortfalls and inadequacies in our programs.

As students we are too often passive learners and blame the instructors, the equipment or the facilities for our lack of interest or lack of learning. We blame the agency for not providing us with enough training, then often complain when we do get sent to training.

We all need to accept personal responsibility in our pursuit of personal excellent. We must be responsible for our learning, our growth, and our development. We must hold ourselves accountable for our choices and our actions. When we do accept this personal responsibility and accountability we will also become a far more effective member of the team, and be better able to contribute to team goals and success.

Take care.
