You know I am a big proponent of trainers being readers. I have encouraged you on numerous occasions to read broadly and deeply on topics from a variety of areas and while you are reading seek to find the connections to what you teach. Also seek to understand how this information, knowledge and wisdom can make you better.
“If books could have more, give more, be more, show more, they would still need readers who bring to them sound and smell and light and all the rest that can’t be in books. The book needs you.”
Gary Paulsen
As Gary Paulsen points out in the above quote books need you. What I take from the quote is that reading is not enough. The books need you and the research needs you. They need you to take action.
Knowledge is not power; it is potential. The potential to effect change. The potential to empower others. The potential to inspire. Knowledge only realizes it’s potential when you share it, when you put it into action.
The books and the research hold great potential to change, inspire, influence, and enhance. The books need you to take action on what you are learning. The books need you to apply what you are learning. The books need you to share what you are learning. The research needs you to find ways to apply it to your training to enhance the learning and retention for the heroic men and women you have the honor and privilege to train.
When you look at the stack of books in your library at home or the digital stack on your iPad accept that you need each other. You need the information, wisdom and knowledge they contain. They need you to reflect on them, learn from them, reflect on what you are reading, gain insights from the reflection and take action on the learning and insights you have gained.
