I recently invested an hour of my time to listen to an interview Tom Bilyeu did with Seth Godin on Bilyeu’s show Impact Theory. Near the end of the interview Bilyeu asked Godin, “What is the impact you want to have on the world?”
- Why do you teach / coach?
- Why do you teach / coach the way that you do?
- How do you define success as a teacher / coach?
- What is it like to be taught / coached by you?
Few of us will have the reach and impact of Seth Godin. Few of us will have an impact on “the world” but, each of you have an impact on the people you teach, on those they mentor, on their families, and on those they teach and coach in the future. You therefore have an impact on your agency and on the profession as a whole. You also have an impact on your community and how they perceive not only your organization, but the profession as a whole.
“Few of us will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events and through the sum total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.”
The second part of Seth’s answer speaks to one of the 3 Guiding Principles of the Excellence in Training philosophy – It Is Not About You. Great teachers and trainers don’t teach for their own sake, they teach to help enhance the competence and confidence of others and give them the tools and the inspiration to “level up” and enhance the culture of their piece of the organization.
You are teaching people how to lead, to teach and to serve. You are teaching them how to be role models and mentors. The generation of men and women you are teaching today will impact future generations.
That is a powerful legacy you are creating every day. Do not take this responsibility lightly.
