Information without context is simply more ‘stuff’ officers have to remember for a test. Information with context becomes knowledge officers can apply on the street.
Skills and tactics without context are just drills and often result in officers simply going through the motions in training. Skills and tactics in context become valuable tools officers can apply in the real world.
Stories without context are just ‘war stories’ that may be fun to listen but, fail to result in any learning or changes in behaviour. Stories in context become powerful images in the mind of the listener and can program them to succeed in similar situations.
Stress is not the key to effective training. Context is. Stress is easy to create in a training environment but without context it is just stress.
In a world where officers are continually get bombarded with ‘stuff’, Context is King.
Reflect on the training you deliver and ask yourself, “Is there context to everything I teach?”
Take care.
