When the Master is No Longer the Student

When the master is longer the student, he is no longer the master.

Japanese Proverb

The best expert is the best student.

(If I could remember which training DVDs or audio programs I got this statement from I would give the speaker credit.)

As you read these statements what thoughts or images come to mind?

Does the statement make you think about what kind of student you are? What kind of teacher or trainer you are?

When I refer to what kind of student you are two issues come to mind:

  1. What kind of student are you when attending someone else’s training session? As a trainer you always need to be the best student in someone else’s class. It always shocks me when I see instructors in someone else’s class having side conversations, texting, checking e-mail, sleeping, and engaging in behaviors that would be completely unacceptable in their classroom or training session. This shows a complete lack of respect to the person teaching the class and sends a horrible message to the rest of the participants.
  2. What are you learning to make yourself a better instructor? What conferences are you attending? What are you reading? What training DVDs are you watching? What audio programs are you listening to? What is your training plan for 2013? What funds have you allocated over the last year for training? What training courses or seminars are you hosting so you can expose yourself and as many of your personnel as possible to great training?

We are in the first week of the new year so now is the time to be thinking about and planning for your personal growth and development for the upcoming year.

I am interested in hearing from you on this topic.

If you could only attend one course or conference this year what would it be? Why?

If you could only host one training program this year at your agency what would it be? Why?

P.S. If you are looking for ideas on courses and seminars to host go to our home page and check out the list of courses and seminar we offer through Winning Mind Training.

Take care.
