It is now the second week of January. The parties are over. The World Junior Hockey Championships are over. All the College Football Bowl games, including the National Championship game, are over. It is time to get serious. Time to get serious about your growth and development. Time to start planning. Time to start asking two questions repeatedly: Who and What.
Who?
Who are you hanging out with that will push you to challenge your thinking and beliefs about training and encourage you to grow? Who are you asking questions of? Who do you need to connect with? Who are you seeking feedback from? Who are you being mentored by? Who are you mentoring?
What?
What are you reading? What are you listening to? What are you doing to make yourself a better trainer? What personal development (not just recertification) courses are you committed to take? What conferences are you going to attend? What do you need to learn? What membership sites are you part of? What questions are you asking to challenge the status quo?
As a trainer you are in a critical position of leadership and influence in your organization. You owe it to the heroic men and women in your agency to be the best trainer you can be. You also have an obligation to your agency, your community and to the profession to be the best trainer you can be. That journey, and it is a never ending journey, requires you to continually ask Who and What.
Take care.
