In a recent blog post sales trainers Jeff Bajorek wrote, “Purpose. When you have it, you need to heed it. When you don’t, you need to seek it. It’s the thing that drives you when you don’t feel like driving anymore.” He went on to state,”Purpose helps you to be curious instead of frustrated.”
In his TEDx talk about the importance of starting with Why, Simon Sinek asks, “What is your purpose, your cause, your belief? Why do you get up in the morning? Why does your organization exist and why should anyone care?”
I believe that your Purpose is your Why. Do you know what your Why is as a trainer? If you do you need to heed it. If you don’t, then take time to answer Joe Ehrmann’s four questions below:
- What are you a coach / trainer?
- Why do you coach / train / teach the way you do?
- How do you define success as a coach / trainer?
- What is it like to be coached / taught by you?
As Bajorek says, knowing your purpose drives you when you don’t feel like driving anymore and helps you to be curious instead of frustrated.
We all have those days when we don’t feel like driving anymore because we are tired, frustrated and teaching a class we have taught 20, 50 or 100 times before. We all have days when we let the people who show up with the “I dare you to teach me anything.” attitude get to us. Your Why and your Purpose keep you going on those days.
Being curious is essential for trainers. Curious about better ways to teach. Curious about how you can engage your students. Curious about what the research on learning says. Curious about how to integrate the research into your training. Curious about how to improve your mind, body and craft. Curious enough to read every day. Curious enough to listen to podcasts and interviews. Curious enough to attend conferences. Curious enough to seek feedback.
Know your why, your purpose, keep driving and stay curious.
Take care.
