On Friday February 8, I did an interview for the Excellence in Training Academy with Scott Buhrmaster on 3 Keys to Building a Successful Training Business. I then did something I had never done before with the Excellence in Training Academy interviews and I immediately sent the mp3 recording of the interview to the members of the EIT Academy Community and asked them to share it after they listened to it. The other 169 interviews were stored in the Member’s Area of the EIT Academy where members always have access to them but, cannot download them or share them.
On Friday February 15, I posted a link to the ILEETA LinkedIn page where people could access and listen to the interview and sent the link and the mp3 recording to hundreds of law enforcement trainers across North America.

Understanding the sceptical nature of law enforcement professionals I know that some people are asking,”Why? What’s in it for you Brian?” So, let me explain why.
In Simon Sinek’s TEDx talk on Start With Why he challenges us to ask ourselves, “What’s your cause, what’s your mission, what’s your purpose, what’s your belief? Why do you get up in the morning? Why does your company exist? Why should anyone care?”
What’s my belief? I believe that law enforcement is a noble and honourable profession. It is also one of the most challenging, demanding, complex and rewarding professions in society today. I believe that the men and women of law enforcement are Heroes. The ancient Greeks believed a Hero was a protector. Someone who was willing to protect not only themselves but to protect others. The core strengths of the Hero are compassion, love and a commitment to something bigger than themselves. Heroes have the physical skills, knowledge and the desire to serve. That commitment by theses heroic men and women to serve their communities can come at a cost. I believe law enforcement professionals face significant challenges every day and are continually confronted with the “suck factor”. I believe law enforcement professionals deserve the best training possible.
What is my mission? I want to inspire the heroic men and women of law enforcement in North America to Embrace the Suck, focus on What’s Important Now and Dare to Be Great. That is why my company Winning Mind Training exists. Winning Mind Training is committed to serving the heroic men and women of law enforcement through workshops, seminars and courses, through the five books we have compiled and published over the years and through my weekly blog posts on Excellence in Training and Life’s Most Powerful Question,
My mission is to spread the W.I.N. philosophy throughout North America.
My mission is to help inspire trainers across North America to become great trainers and deliver awesome training through the Excellence in Training workshops and courses, through my weekly blog, through the Excellence in Training Academy and through my work with ILEETA.
I am however only one trainer and I can only reach a small number of the 900,000 to 1 million law enforcement professionals in North America. I teach a limited number of topics. More importantly, it is not about me. It is about those heroic men and women who show up every day to serve as officers, deputies, constables, troopers, agents, corrections officers, and dispatchers. It is about their families and loved ones.
I believe the best way to serve those heroic men and women of law enforcement is to:
- Work to help good trainers become great trainers and great trainers to deliver awesome training. That is why I am so passionate about the Excellence in Training course I teach and the Excellence in Training Academy and it is why I am so passionate about and committed to ILEETA.
- Continually find ways to help passionate and committed trainers who have or are starting a training business to be successful so they can continue to deliver high quality training across North America.
It is point #2 where Scott Buhrmaster comes in. Scott has been working with the law enforcement profession for 30 years through his company the Buhrmaster Group, and his work with Calibre Press, PoliceOne and for the last 10 years with the Force Science Institute. As of the end of January he stepped away from Force Science to once again focus on his business and help law enforcement trainers build and sustain successful training businesses. This is the missing piece for the profession. I do not know of any other business development professional who offers what Scott does to the law enforcement training community. He not only understands the keys to building a successful business, he understands training and he understands the law enforcement profession. In addition to an impressive resume Scott is a quality individual with a heart of service and a passionate dedication to our profession.
That is why when Scott let me know he would be stepping away from Force Science to pursue his business I immediately asked if he would be willing to do the interview for the Excellence in Training Academy. My original intent was to only post it to the Member’s Area Excellence in Training Academy. I then realized this was too important a message not to share it with a broader audience, which is why I told Scott I was going to get the interview out to as many law enforcement trainers as I could. It is also why I approached Scott and suggested we do a weekly podcast for his company on The Business of Training. (We will be launching that in near future.) The Episode 1 will let you get to know Scott better as a person so you know the man behind the business beyond his impressive resume. Episodes 2 through 4 will lay the foundation for the three keys to building a successful business. Starting with Episode 5 Scott will address one actionable strategy every week, which you can implement in the next seven days to build your business. If you take action on the information he will share every week you will make great strides in your business. These will be posted on Scott’s website at http://buhrmastergroup.com.
What’s in it for me? Helping Scott get his message out helps me fulfill my mission of serving the heroic men and women of law enforcement. Every great trainer who is able to build and sustain a successful training business, and deliver great content will raise the bar for law enforcement training as a whole, which by default will serve the profession. Plus, every interview I do, I learn and grow. What’s in it for me? Knowing that in some small way I can help serve the men and women who serve their communities and law enforcement professionals.
